Since 2019 all three of my sons have played Quarterback in high school, with 2 of them spending 6 years as the varsity starter (QB1). This Monday, June 29, 2026 my youngest son (QB1) will play in his last 7's practice......
For our family tackle football began way back in July....before they began kindergarten in August. Thus, by the time of their senior year of high school they had played 12 full seasons of football..... All those years ago it seemed the game would never end.....but now the list of "lasts" are slowing filling our calendars.....with Monday being the last 7's........
If you are not a football family, it's possible the term 7's is foreign for you, let me explain. 7's is very much like flag football, or 2-hand touch. 7 refers to the QB, his 2 outside receivers, 2 interior slot receivers, a running back most often running a bubble and of course a center to snap the ball.......
7's is much like a playground game.....football without contact or the fatties on the line. An opportunity to run routes, and practice with the skilled players only...... Remember how much fun you had on the school's playground? Which brings up how this article began, "why do we have to grow up?" It is with great sorrow on Monday I will drive to our last day of 7's...... the beginning of the end of my son's childhood.
What will I look forward too....... I honestly don't know, but I'm open to hear your suggestions!
Logan, Dillon and Brody Slinkard have all thrown varsity touchdowns. Logan spent 4 years as QB1, and Brody Slinkard is entering his 2nd year leading the program.
