As a kid my home town had a legendary coach, Mr. Cookson. He was old school in every sense of the word, including his approach to discipline. Once you reached the 7th grade (or above) our school settled fights between students in the gym.....
Teachers would send students to see coach Cookson, he would hand you a pair of gloves and the fight was on! By on, I mean you fought until someone won......
A friend of mine (Joe Scherer) got into a little shoving match with another boy, true to form Mr. Cookson laced them up and the boxing match was on. If you are a local - the match that day was outside, next to the band room on a make shift softball field.
The fight began even enough with both boys landing a few solid blows to the head, but in time Joe slowly began to win the fight. Despite winning, the other boy didn't go down......
When I say the fights concluded with a winner, I mean one of the fighters was going to be laying on the ground questioning their life's choices...... That day Joe punched until his anger was gone.....but that wasn't enough for Coach Cookson, insisting Joe punch his friend until the fight was over and his friend went down.....
Finally, bent over like a broken man crushed by life, blood pouring from his mouth and nose the loseing boxer hit the ground..... and the fight ended. It is easy to be mouthy, just look at the word-wars that play out on Facebook, but when you know an argument will only be settled with the ultimate defeat of someone......well in an odd way it sort of helps to keep the peace. FAFO - can be an effective strategy when theory becomes practice.
