I am convinced this reflects at least one of your grandparents' home, if not the house you grew up in. The family was so filled with pride the day the cabinet styled television was delivered the emotional connection was instantly too strong to throw it away at the end of it's life.....
I bet your community had at least one old military veteran (probably Navy) that learned to work on radios, televisions and other general electronic pieces as a young man. Once his military service ended he came home chain smoking Marlboro Reds with an addiction to cheap whiskey and the need to take care of at least a couple single mothers. For work he sat up a television repair shop in a shed out back before eventually filling half his home with gently used electronics anyone could make weekly payments to own. His CB handle was something like "Tv-Man" and he was the local hook up for illegal cb radios that could blast your voice across America......
Saying someday the family will take the old tv to Tv-Man to be fixed, but for now we will just watch a new one from Walmart, the new tv stacked nicely on the old tv cabinet and there was even room for a new fangled VCR to sit next to it.
Someday never came, eventually (after 12-15 years) someone drove a pickup to Sunday dinner and they were bribed into making the old tv disappear. Did it end up in a landfill, or sitting beside the old gravel road on the edge of town......no one really knows.
